Book plug

I'm a big fan of the book Design for Community. It would certainly compliment this week's reading list if anyone wanted to check it out.

One important guideline is to promote good users within the community. Any decent community needs a fair share of moderation and administration. Give those roles to your most active users. Not only is it cheaper to use volunteers, but they've already proven that they're passionate about your community.

Furthermore, when a moderator takes action (by say, banning an abuser), the community sees it as though they're policing themselves, rather than as some unilateral action taking by the omnipotent site owner.
